Family-Owned Business
Turns Out to be a Picture of Success
By Natasha M. Surles
Leon Durham strives to provide quality service to every customer who
enters Annie’s Art Gallery. Durham, a native Washingtonian, worked for
28 years with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
(Metro). Today, he is the owner/founder of Annie’s Art Gallery; a
gallery that started as a home-based business brings quality works of
art into each and every home. Their motto is “You Bring It … We Frame
It”.
Annie’s Art Gallery, named after his mother, searches high and low to
bring quality framing for customers at reasonable prices.
This family-owned business, started over 10 years ago, has supplied
customers in the Washington metropolitan area, as well as across the
country, with quality custom framing.
It was not until he inherited a collection of picture frames from his
mother that Durham considered framing as a hobby. This hobby started
out as a way to add art work to his home. He started buying art and
framing it at his leisure. |

After giving some of his pieces
away to family and friends, and going on the suggestion of a friend he
saw something more. Durham started to take the necessary steps to
change his hobby into a profession.
Durham, who is self-trained, learned everything he knows from reading,
studying, attending trade shows, visiting art galleries and attending
framing workshops. His son, Kevin, recently joined him in the business
and they have moved to their new gallery location at 5814 Allentown Way,
Camp Springs, MD.
Durham says that all of his
success is a blessing and gift from God. Everything that has unfolded
before his eyes, including his hard work, dedication and teaming with
his son shows that God can work through a willing vessel.
He is extremely modest about the success of the gallery. When asked
what advice he would give to any entrepreneur, Durham says, “first put
your trust in the Lord and whatever you choose to do, you must study
hard, be willing to work hard for what you believe and have an
understanding that with any business venture you must have the patience
to watch it grow”.
On June 13, 2007, Annie’s Art Gallery celebrated its ten-year
anniversary. They look forward to many more successful years to come.
